In 1908, Edward Bates opened a photo studio in Lawton, Oklahoma. Located just south of Fort Sill, where Native Americans from the Great Plains had been “resettled” during the latter part of the nineteenth century, Lawton was founded in 1901 just as the last of the Native American lands in the Oklahoma Territory was opened up to non-Indian settlement. Bates produced numerous studio portraits of Native American subjects - postcards which were sold at local shops as tourist souvenirs.
